Has anyone else had a problem where the GUI freezes completely?

I'm not 100% sure that it is caused by Xcode but it always seems to happen
when I'm using Xcode. The problem has been happening on and off since I
upgraded to a Dual Processor 1.8GHz G5 (10.3.3). It has also spanned Xcode
1.1.1 and 1.2.

There is a very long thread on Apple's G5 discussion forum entitled "Living with G5 Freezes", which details GUI freezing problems many users have experienced.

This problem does not seem to be tied to any specific application such as XCode; for me, iChat video is the primary trigger. The typical failure mode is very random as you reported--fine for several days, followed by repeated crashes. No one has identified a verifiable cause, it's not even clear if the problem is hardware, software, or some combination. The problem may not be limited to G5's, although G5 owners seem to be affected most severely.

Some report relief after swapping out motherboards, video cards, RAM, etc. Many people have gone through numerous hardware and software fixes only to have the problem return. It is extremely frustrating, and Apple hasn't done a good job of acknowledging, much less resolving, the problem.
