Debugger key focus problem?

Hello all,
I'm converting a Carbon C/C++ CW project to the latest XCode (1.2, IDE309.0,
Core 310.0 ToolSupport 307.0) on 10.3.3(7F44).
Poking around the preferences panel, I found the "Metrowerks Compatible" key
bindings, and instantly thought I'd found a way to cut my leaning curve...
until I found that these key bindings seem to quit working after changing the
focus in the debugger window.
If I start a debug session, the MW key bindings for step over (^S), step into
(^T), and step out (^U) work only until I change the focus, say, to the
variables pane. Then all the keys will do is beep. (the iconic buttons in the
toolbar and selections under the menu continue to work by mousing, but I'd
rather use the keyboard to step.)
I can't find the correct pane to click (by trial and error) to reset the focus
so that the keyboard mapping will work again. If I reset my prefs to the
"Xcode Defaults" key bindings, I can click in any pane I like and the keyboard
equivalents (Cmd-Shift-O, etc) always work.
Keyboard equivalents to alleviate "muscle memory" issues aren't very useful
when they suddenly go deaf. Is there a "magic pane" somewhere I can click to
reset the focus so the MW equivalents work again during a debugging session?
Thanks
Jeffrey Johnson
