XCode doesn't like NSStringPboardType producing service? (aka What the..?)

(Sorry for the crosspost, but it really does deal with both Cocoa and XCode)

I have created an output only service that places a NSStringPboardType item on the return
pasteboard and it works great. The item gets inserted in BBEdit, TextEdit, etc, with only one
exception, XCode.

Maddeningly though, I wrote the service FOR XCode (as no matter what the doc says, it is still
pretty external editor hostile).

I would certainly expect it to handle this simple pasteboard type. Anyone have any clue as to
why it might not?

Can anyone recommend a string producing service that I could use to check if it is just my
service or something in XCode?
