Disappearing reference in debugger

Today I inadvertently pointed a function pointer:
unsigned int (*MakeIndex)(Move_T move);
at a function:
unsigned int myHHindex(Move_T& move);
Oops. The function was by reference, but the function _pointer wasn't.
But, I don't see a warning, or a compile error. Instead, I get a
Program received signal: "EXC_BAD_ACCESS".
with the stack trace showing
#0 0x0001020c in myHHindex(__Move_T&) (move=@0x0) at
/Users/markian/Documents/School/PhD/Development/CodeGen/Games/Lose
Checkers/applicationDependencies.cc:1436
Now, while I finally figured it out, it took a while. Why isn't this a
bug?
Markian
