I don't think the option exists in single-file searching, but could
you use the "Definitions" search type for a multifile search and then
find the file you needed in the listing?
Ian
Someone handed me a tarball of code that I need to unravel. Part of the
unraveling process is figuring out the variables and what they are used
for. Unfortunately, whoever coded this mess seems to have been aiming
to win the obfuscated C code contest. They used the letter 'h' as their
variable of choice, making it a static variable in some files, and a
local variable in others. They also decided that putting all of their
variables in clearly marked areas within functions or files wasn't fun,
and tended to dribble them wherever they felt like. I'm now trying to
figure which 'h' goes where, and back document what they did before I go
ahead and turn it into something that is maintainable. The problem is
that ordinary text searches turn up too many hits, and regular
expression searches may miss things. Is it possible to search by type
as well as text? E.g. 'look for 'h' which happens to be of type 'foo''?
Truthfully, I'd prefer a search that understands use-def chains so that
I can click on a variable and jump back through its definitions (uses)
all the way back to where it was declared. I know that XCode doesn't do
the use-def thing right now, but I was wondering if there was a way to
search by type. (Heck, being able to limit searches just to where
variables are declared would be good; then I could search through that
subset for the letter h and the file I'm currently in)
Thanks,
Cem Karan
