Ken,
The installer actually does rebuild the cache - the cache is tied to a
specific version of gdb so this has to be done. You can also remake
the cache by hand using the /usr/libexec/gdb/cache-symfiles script
(that's what the installer runs).
But there is something in this process that very occasionally goes
wrong. We haven't been able to reproduce the problem here, and it
wasn't obvious looking at examples of the bad cache what went wrong.
So we haven't figured out what is going on yet.

What is this error, and how does one treat it? It's new since I

A problem internal to GDB has been detected. Further
debugging may prove unreliable.

Try deleting the contents of /usr/libexec/gdb/symfiles (or, rather,
move them out of the way) and see if that helps. I think gdb's
complaining that a cached symfile is invalid.

Bingo. That did it.
APPLE: I think your 1.5 upgrade-installer should do this, since it
seems to be an issue!
