I'm a .NET developer that toys around with XCode & WebObjects, so I'm not
going to be a ton of help here. However, with that said, you are in for a
few surprises when you jump the fence from conventional Windows development
to Mac/Java.
I think the closest you are going to get to ADO/ADO.NET, on the OSX side of
the house, is a combination of JDBC and either Enterprise Objects or
something like Hibernate. Generally speaking, JDBC handles the actual
connectivity to the database while the other two packages (EO or Hibernate)
handle all of the calls to the database based on what OBJECTS you want to
pull from the database.
It's a very different way of thinking than what we are used to. Most
Microsoft guys are so used to pulling recordsets, defining cursors, and
basically "man handling" the data, that we cannot break free from that
mentality. However, when you start talking XCode and/or Java, you are going
to find people wanting to adhere to OOP standards much more than the folks
with Visual Studio on their desktop. And, "adhering to OOP standards" means
for database activity as well.
Good luck. And, get used to hearing the words, "forget about the database."

P.S. You will find that Enterprise Objects (or "EO") is for WebObjects while
Hibernate is a open source project to do the same thing for both
conventional and web development.

Hello,
I'm experimenting in xcode at home (doing vb.net & oracle sql at work) and
i've got a question: what is the preferred database access method for client
server development ? in visual studio we've had ado for connected access,
and now ado.net, which is more for disconnected datasets, but what do you do
in xcode to connect to an Oracle or mysql db ? I read about Webobjects but
it's for web dev and not part of Xcode.
Hasn't Apple it's own data access method ?
Thanks,
Andreas
