I've had my question completely ignored on two lists when I thought I'd taken the time to write my question properly, list what I'd tried so far, and ask for a pointer to some sample code rather than an answer.

There's no need to interpret the lack of response as being unwelcoming. This is an email list, not a roomful of people. If you get no response, it just means nobody had an answer for you.
