Then I guess the big question is, is it safe to download the gcc package and compile it from the command line?
By the answers I've gotten I have to assume apple did not compile the gcc binary they distribute as cross compiler

So I thought that gcc could cross compile, but the information I have
gotten leads me to believe that in xcode it is not possible to cross
compile? If any one knows where I can find docs on cross compiling on mac
os x please help.

GCC can cross compiler only if you compile to be a cross compiler.
