Obviously, Apple focusses mainly on the OS X platform.

And I know that the one time I tried building the stuff from there [FSF sources], I got so many problems I wrote it off as a worthless exercise (it needed way too much undocumented stuff set up)

Well, the last time I tried myself, it worked as flawlessly as on any other Unix-like platform. I used configure/make to build the pieces.

As you said, there are differences between OpenDarwin and FSF sources. OpenDarwin sources should be more advanced regarding the Darwin / OS X target, FSF sources should be more advanced regarding those other targets.

Cheers, Markus
