can't connect an NSScrollView to an IBOutlet

is there a trick to this? i have created an NSScrollView in a window and created a class which has an outlet of type NSScrollView yet when i ctrl drag the instance to the Scroll view on the window i can't connect it. says that my outlet needs to be of type NSScrollView. am i missing something here?
