Just my 2 cents...

Keep in mind that I don't actually have this problem because we currently
use another compiler :-)

However, one reason I can think of is that, I as a developer, know all the
ins and outs of how to use Xcode (in theory).  We have a build team that
does not have this same level of knowledge.  I would think we'd want to
have me setup the build location and be able to relay that information to
the builder.  I don't think this would work very well if every user has
their own build location.

Also, a per-user location would mean that the per-user preference file is
checked in under source control so each extract keeps the designated
location.  Again, I MAY be willing to put up with this, but the build team
has other things to keep track of :-)

In my case, I would want to be able to set a project relative path that is
inside the source code tree, in a well known location, so all projects
build to the same location and the particular extract directory does not
matter.

My hope is that I can set up a default.pbxuser file that will address
these issues...
