I had the same problem yesterday with my cable. Since that was
discussed here before I'll tell you what I finally ended up doing
(after much running around town)
I got a reasonably cheap 20" Viewsonic LCD. Unfortunately it didn't
come with a DVI cable. Most of the DVI cables around are *vastly*
overpriced. (CompUSA had it for nearly $80, BestBuy for $60 with
other places comparable) Shopping around I found one locally for
around $35.
However as many have mentioned, the DVI-I cable won't fit in the DVI-
D port on the video card. I found that taking some needlenose pliers
and simply pulling out the four pins for analog data that are around
the long rectangular pin on the left worked. Works like a charm.
However as others mentioned, those four pins are what supply the
analog signal. The unmentioned system's video card for inexplicable
reasons doesn't have a VGA connector. Presumably because the unnamed
company making the unmentioned machine apparently was too cheap to
put it on and only has a DVI-D connector. So you have to buy a DVI-I
cable and then convert it to DVI-D or buy a DVI-D cable. (Which are
very, very rare I've found)
If I were you I'd write email@hidden and lodge your complaint. I
did upon the recommendation of someone else. It really is egregious
to have to waste this much time just trying to get things to work
with a monitor. Further, like many here I suspect, we use large CRTs
rather than LCDs. Having to find one on quick notice is a pain.
Further you have all the issues of getting purchase orders and the
like. It can be a nightmare. Had Apple warned us we could have made
arrangements.
Unfortunately we can't discuss these machines anywhere due to the
NDA. (I'd assume the above is OK since it is widely discussed both
here and elsewhere) It makes resolving problems a real pain. Apple
ought set up a mailing list for the machines limited to those who've
agreed to the NDA.
