As a belated public followup to this issue, I finally traced the issue outlined below to setting an External Editor for source code files.

When I set an external editor (SubEthaEdit) for source code (so that double-clicking a file opens it in SubEthaEdit), XCode will no longer save files when I edit them from within XCode (which I do when I just want to make a minor change). I guess this may be a protective measure to try to prevent me saving files in XCode and SubEthaEdit at the same time - if that's the case, I think it could be more betterly implemented...

In seemingly all of my projects, I can no longer (manually) Save files in Xcode 2.1.

When I modify a file, its icon turns dark to indicate that it's unsaved, but Save and Save all remain grayed out. Attempting to save with cmd-S causes a system beep, and no save. When I build, any modified files are happily saved (with either 'automatically save' or 'ask first' preferences set). If I quit Xcode, I'm prompted to Save files as usual, and that works.

I can trash com.apple.Xcode.plist and I'm back working, but of course, I have to customise my environment again. So far, I seem to get a week before I can't save and need to delete the prefs again. I haven't noticed any reproducible behaviour on my part that leads to the problem.

Some, but not all, of these projects are under CVS. One is connected to anonymous CVS at sf.net.

All projects are inside my home directory, and project files are either in the same folder as .xcodeproj or in folders inside that.

Using the "All-in-one" window.

It seems that nobody else has reported this problem. I've filed a bug, which will help Apple, but can anyone suggest any preventative medicine for me?

cheers,
Josh
