Wasn't the original question about slow linking? If so, the problem
does indeed lie with the GNU tools, and not XCode. XCode _is_ the
IDE, the GNU tools are responsible for compilation and linking and as
the previous poster pointed out, these can be slow in any incarnation.

"Xcode" is not merely the IDE, it is also the name for the entire
developer tools set collectively. So Xcode is indeed the problem.
