I had the exact same problem, plus similar problems with "fi", "ff",
"o/", etc. after upgrading to Tiger.  Turns out to be a font ligature
problem;  I had a "bad"/old copy of the Monaco font in my
~/Library/Fonts directory;  Once I took that away, everything was
fine.  If you run the Font Book application, it shows you all your
fonts, and the duplicates are marked with a dot, so you can easily see
where you have some fonts that should perhaps be removed.
