I am using OS X 10.4.2 and XCode 2.1 on a 667Mhz G4 Powerbook with

upgraded components but at no point done a clean install. I am quite
new to the world of the Macintosh. Shark reports its version number as
4.2.0 (v479).

This is a known problem. Apple want's you to upgrade to the upgraded beta version 4.2.0a15 that they have made available at the link included below:

The easiest solution is to install the CHUD package from our FTP site after you install Xcode 2.1. The version in the Xcode package is a bit older and buggier.
