Thanks, I've also discovered that UTF-16 doesn't exhibit the bug, but I'm not sure I want to double the size of my sources.  

I haven't really thought too much about what the "best encoding" is. I  think I switched to UTF-8 to make it easy to specify funky characters in UTF8 string constants.
