I haven't really thought too much about what the "best encoding" is. I think I switched to UTF-8 to make it easy to specify funky characters in UTF8 string constants.

If it's just bullets, you could convert to MacRoman, a bullet is one byte in that encoding, maybe the bug wouldn't happen then.
