To add to the "gcc can be slow when" anecdotes, I had a file that was a large number of

blah[0][0] = 1.2345;
blah[0][1] = 3.4567;
blah[0][2] = 9.0123;

for a couple of thousand lines (it was code generated by something else for use in a debugging situation, not something you'd really want to release into the wild). With -O0, compiling took a reasonable amount of time. Compiling with any optimization turn on sent gcc into extreme navel gazing and would never come back (well, I lost patience after my powerbook fan kicked in after 5 minutes)
