I see no visual difference between the Terminal Inspector and Finder's View Options (which is essentially an inspector).

Look again - the standard Font Panel window title bar has the "background" white and striped look, while the Terminal Window Settings inspector has the gray gradient look.

That's only because when you bring up the terminal inspector, it gets focus. when you bring up the font panel, it does NOT get focus. I just noticed that if you click the font panel ONLY IN THE TITLE BAR, you give it focus and now command-w and escape work therein!!! This is ridiculously inconsistent, unless someone can explain the consistency to me. Still, if it needs to be explained, I submit that it is by definition neither consistent nor intuitive!

Don't mix the Finder into this - it's not only a Carbon app, but also really weird in so many other ways. Don't get me started... In fact, I think it's probably best for this thread if we can keep it on a "conceptual" level. You will of course be able to find apps that stick out for one reason or other. Hopefully they have a good reason for doing so, and if not - why not file an enhancement request / bug report?

Fair enough. I'm just trying to get floating windows to behave in a way that make intuitive sense and is consistent across _most apps. I expect apple apps to be the _most consistent.

I'm also not aware of a visual difference for key or non-key. To me, Xcode's Font window can be active or not. (I don't know if this is what you mean by "main.")

This is Cocoa terminology, I'm not sure if it exists in Carbon or not. Read more here:

Note that they use the Font Panel as an example of a key window, which is a bit unfortunate as it most often isn't. In the screenshot it has the right appearance on the title bar, but it doesn't have a highlighted control, so I wonder if it's doctored? Not that it its very important...

It looks like a font panel that has been given focus, which doesn't automatically happen when you bring up the font panel.
