That phrasing will be toned down or removed in the next release of Xcode. There have been enough users that depend on built products being built into a location that is independent of configuration, that the default will continue to exist.

That said, we still recommend that users find a way (if possible) to support per-configuration build locations, since they solve a number of problems that are inherent in building multiple versions of the same product to the same location.

Which is, of course, "not recommended or supported." Guess I need to file an another enhancement request.

Check out the expert preferences notes in the Help menu. There is a user default to turn off the "per-configuration build locations".

I have a problem with the new way Xcode 2.1 places built products.
Xcode now places the built products under a subdirectory of its build
configuration name, e.g. Development, Deployment.

I agree this is actually a good thing in general and an improvement,
but I have a program that absolutely *must* have it's resource files
in a directory at or under the executable. Setting a working directory
path or symbolic links will not work (you might call it a kind of a
security feature of the program). The resources are big and sometimes
shared via network mounts with other computers so I don't want to copy
in the resources every time I build.

In previous versions of Xcode, I would use the "Place Build Products
in:" from the Project's Info inspector option to my directory like
/SomePlace/ProjectResources. The resources would already be here and
Xcode would simply place the built copy there.

But with Xcode 2.1, the option is placing the executable in a subdirectory:
/SomePlace/ProjectResources/Development

This is making it impossible for me to run my program from Xcode
because it can't find the resources. I don't think adding a shell
script phase to copy the built product will help me much because I
want to launch from Xcode so I can easily specify command line
switches (for debugging) and also launch the program under the Xcode
debugger directly. As far as I know, Xcode won't launch my copied
version, only the version it builds which is in the wrong directory.

Is there a way I can set/override Xcode to not place the built product
in a subdirectory of the build configuration name?

Thanks,
Eric
