Chris Espinosa wrote a bit about this in a thread with subject "Xcode 2.1 saving lag" not long ago on this list.

In general, if you have performance problem you should use Shark to collect sample reports and submit them to the Xcode team via RadarWeb. And even if they end up not prioritizing your bug report, it's often interesting to see what it is that Xcode is doing at these times - sometimes you can find a workaround based on a simple analysis of the sample.

I notice that XCode becomes slower and slower when editing some "bigger" files, say greater than 200 lines. (not to mention really big files!)

Deleting with <backspace> takes about 0.5 secs per character, saving a file takes 4 secs, and the editor can't handle more than 300 keystrokes per min. Inserting characters with the "repeat key" funtion is about 3.5 times slower than in TextEdit - or in XCode it takes 14 secs to insert 100 characters with the repeat key function. Of course, i set it to max speed on the keyboard preferences, but it is limited by XCode.

Switching to another file within the editor takes about 1 sec until it updates, and to update the function popup takes up to 5 secs for a file with 300 lines.

Sometimes it is that *slow*, that it even does nothing. Only after a few secs, or only when you are changing something else, the editor refreshes and shows the edited portions. So it happens very frequently for instance, that i delete a character twice - because i do not visually recognize it the first time.

I don“t remember the old times, as I had to wait for an editor finishing its tasks. Now, XCode apparently brings it back.

I tried to disble code completion, but this does not help.

But it is not only the editor, almost all other tasks are pretty slow, too. For instance, just saving the preference dialog *sometimes* takes about 10 secs - and the pizza starts spinning.
My system runs fine, otherwise - so i don't think there is something bad in the base.

Needless to say, that this is pretty annoying.
I would appreciate it if this could be improved. And with improving, i mean a speedup of about 3 to 10 times - not just 20 or 50%.
