Allan Odgaard, the author of TextMate (http://www.macromates.com)
text editor hit a similar issue. He partially solved it by using
clever caching and threaded colorization, and after a few iterations
he got it working really well and fast. But it comes at the price of
not using the Cocoa text editor at all.

that is causing this. Maybe the same issue, maybe not, thought it
was worth mentioning.
