We might need to continue support 10.3 customers who've not upgraded to 10.3.9 so we need to use gcc 3.3

Dependant on how urgent this need is, you might want to have a look at the gcc coming with Darwin/OpenDarwin. Darwin standalone supported and unsed FAT/Universal binaries (they are the same, right?) for ppc & i386 since it's birth.
