CONFIGURATION
Contains the name of the build configuration being used.

Thanks Chris. It seems to work, although I'm still compiling my various projects.

I realized I grepped printenv with "Default" while the active target was "Universal".
$CONFIGURATION does the trick.

Talking about the documentation of build configurations, I noticed that in Xcode 2.0 documentation, the build style is part of the diagram of the build layers while in 2.1 documentation, build configurations are not part of this diagram anymore. Nevertheless, I got (with some trial and error) inherited variables working: GCC_PREPROCESSOR_DEFINITIONS is defined in the configuration with my own defines and release/profile targets have it set to "$ (GCC_PREPROCESSOR_DEFINITIONS) NDEBUG".
