Thanks for that - very useful. Here's a Bash function that makes it slightly easier:

gcc_defines () { tmpfile="/tmp/foo$$.cpp"; echo "int main(){return 0;}" > $tmpfile; /usr/bin/gcc -E -dM $tmpfile; rm $tmpfile ; }
