I'm sure there is internal documentation for the file format. Is there a reason why it hasn't been published?

I apologize for not being clearer in my original post. Yes, I'm referring to the .pbxproj file in the Xcode package/bundle/project. I'm relatively new to the Mac, so I'm not sure what the appropriate term is for the .xcode directory where the .pbxproj file is stored.

Thanks.

Okay, time for a bit of Xcode project file extension history :)

Xcode 2.1: .xcodeproj
Xcode 1.0-2.0: .xcode
Project Builder 2.x: .pbproj
Project Builder 1.x: .pbxproj

As of Xcode 2.1 we will recognize any of the prior extensions and offer to create an upgraded .xcodeproj file alongside the older project file. In Xcode 2.0 and prior to we offered to upgrade the project file to the latest version without changing the extension.

In any case, currently there is no public documentation on the Xcode project file format.

In either case the formats of the project files are not documented.

He may be referring to the pbxproj file in the xcode project package.
In that case the latest XCode 2.1 pbxproj has comments describing the
various sections of the file. Not really documentation, but might tell
you enough for your purposes.
