For what it's worth (this is a documentation issue) - I have always
been reading that option as if it were "Enable Altivec-extensions" -
i.e. extensions to Altivec. I had assumed that Altivec itself was
always enabled. But I've never used Altivec explicitly so it was
never really an issue. I started to wonder about this with the new
(for gcc 4) auto-vectorizing.
