Script phase hangs in gnumake

Hello,

This might be slightly off topic - I apologize if that's the case.
We run automated builds of all our projects several times per day. Since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.1 + Xcode 2.1, from Mac OS X 10.3.9 + Xcode 1.2, we've started to have problems with some of our projects - the build process sometimes (not always!) hangs forever in one of our script build phases, the script runs a makefile based target that builds a dynamic C library.

(Apple employees, see Radar 4159063)

The graph of processes at the time of the hang looks something like this:

xcodebuild
    ->    sh
        ->    sh
            ->    gnumake

Last lines of sample of the make process:

    ...
    0.0%    100.0%    make    0xc6e4 [2.0KB]
    0.0%    100.0%    make    0x113e8 [188B]
    0.0%    100.0%    libSystem.B.dylib    putchar
    0.0%    100.0%    libSystem.B.dylib    __swbuf
    0.0%    100.0%    libSystem.B.dylib    __fflush
    0.0%    100.0%    libSystem.B.dylib    _swrite
    100.0%    100.0%    libSystem.B.dylib    write

Last lines of sample of the sh processes:

    ...
    0.0%    100.0%    sh    0x20408 [572B]
    100.0%    100.0%    libSystem.B.dylib    wait4

A couple of questions:

* Is this a "known" problem? If it is, is there any fix / workaround?
* What could I do to better diagnose and troubleshoot this problem?

Thanx!

j o a r
