That's too scary to contemplate. Once upon a time there were over 50 DTS
engineers that all they did was answer emails (remember AppleLink? ;-). We
didn't charge incidents for this so we'd answer almost anything. (My two
fav's were "Why penguin's can't fly" by Tim Derks (the "true" penguin can!)
and "The evolution of our calendar" by Brian (blob) Betchel.)
When it was suggested to go to today's incident based system I protested
because I was worried that student and one-man developer(s) wouldn't be able
to afford our support. I pushed VERY hard for our first mailing lists. I
felt it was very important for everyone (regardless of budget) to get
whatever support they needed. I didn't want anyone to not develop for
Macintosh because they couldn't afford support.
I have to admit that I initially had my doubts but the public mailing lists
have succeeded beyond my expectations. Their are now only 16 engineers left
in DTS and we only answer the most specific technology questions. The
mailing list more than make up the difference. The collective "pool of
knowledge" available from the developer peers on the lists far exceeds that
of all the engineers that ever worked in DTS. (I can safly say that I've
learned more from the list than I've contributed. ;-)
