IB makes NSSplitView awkward to adjust

Is it just me, or is the NSSplitView incredibly awkward to adjust from within IB?

I try moving the controls inside the split view, and they are very awkward to select, and they won't actually move or resize at all.

But the same controls will move and resize just fine, when outside of the split view.

Is there some kind of work around?
