Is the NSSplitView even usable? I've tried everything I can think of to make it usable. But no matter what I try, any control I put inside it, I can't edit it's properties anymore. It's the size properties I want to edit.

NSSplitView is an older class that is quite limited in what it can do. There is one third-party alternative I'm aware of, though, called RBSplitView. You might want to try using that class instead. Search VersionTracker for more information.
