debug build balloons in size from 10 MB to 260 MB

When switching to debug build (that is with -g), the resulting binary swells to 260 MB, versus 10 MB without -g.
The main issue with this is that I am building a library, so I can't use zero-link, and linking time goes from 10 seconds in release to 70 seconds in debug (on a dual 1.8 G5).
I am using XCode 1.5 with gcc 3.3.

I realize this is more of a gcc question than xcode, but does anyone have any suggestions for reducing the size of the debug build?
