Unless you do something unusual, you shouldn't fiddle with build
phases. Xcode handles this for you.
First, make sure, the file pair is part of your project. If they are
listed in the "Groups & Files", they are.
To get them involved in the build process, you have to add both files
to the current target. Easiest way to do so, IMHO, is to add the
"Target Membership" checkboxes column to the Groups & Files pane.
Ctrl-click in the pane's title to select the column.
Then make the target you want to build with current, check the box
left to the file in the Groups & Files pane and there you go.
The next time you add a file pair, Xcode offers you to do all these
steps at once.
does anyone see my (probably outrageously simple) mistake?
You didn't do one of the tutorials? Xcode has a preferred way to
build things and it works a lot easier if you follow this path.
