simple user interface

Hello everyone.

Most [all] of the code I do is research-based, and doesn't tend to have a UI component. Recently, inspired by a debate with a friend, I thought it would be cool to write a little application that demonstrated Fitts' Law. Most specifically, that it's faster to acquire a global menu bar than a window-based menu bar.

Sadly, I don't have the expertise in Cocoa or Carbon (Java?) to do this quickly, and I don't have time (ie my advisor would kill me) to spend learning it.

It occurred to me that this might be a good place to ask if anyone has or can recommend any appropriate sample code. Essentially what I would need to do would be:

-place the mouse at a (random?) location
-identify target.
-start timer when the pointer starts moving
-end timer when menu is selected
-accrue data for graphing, averages, etc.

anyone have anything that I could possibly adapt? Java would be ideal, I think, since it could be run on multiple platforms. (though I lack experience there too)

Thanks,

Markian
