You are running into a known issue that is fixed in the next release
of Xcode.

Scott,
I've noticed this issue as well, but I noticed that Xcode isn't
saving the quotation marks to disk inside the project file. If I
manually put them in the project file, everything works fine the
next time I open the project, but they are removed when the project
is automatically resaved. In the instances where I tried to used
spaces, I put quotes around the variable name like so: "$
{TARGET_BUILD_DIR}"/some_sub_directory. This works fine, except
that it isn't saved to disk, so it works until I close the experiment.

Hi,
is it forbidden to use spaces in build configuration names? I
just set up a build configuration with a space in its name, and
Xcode is unable to find my headers that are in the build director
(referenced with ${TARGET_BUILD_DIR} in the search paths). Even
adding quotation marks around them didn't help, a look at the
detailed build output reveals that Xcode removed the quotation
marks and interpreted it as two separate paths.
This just as a word of caution for fellow Xcode users - the
wonderful world of Unix tools doesn't like our Mac habits.
Seems ironic to me that in 2005, Apple software on the Mac would
choke on spaces in path names.
