Can't clear build flag

A handful of source files in my project get built every time, even when I have made no changes that require them to be rebuilt. Indeed, if I select one of these files in the file list on the left side of the project window, so that it appears in the list view, the check mark in the build column never clears, even immediately after the file is built. Am I missing a setting somewhere that I could toggle to stop this unnecessary building? Many thanks.
