In CW, you could drag files around in the "link order" view to change the
compilation order. In Xcode, I can reorder files within the project (left
pane), which has no apparent effect; and couldn't find a way to reorder
files in the "compile phase" display. Am I missing something?

You're missing something. Try re-ordering the files in the "Compile sources" build phase of the target.
