Why the question about whether the machine is dual or not?
Certainly want to avoid this in the future.
I can well imagine that. We have seen, a very few times (I think yours
is number 5 or 6), a race condition in the low-level file system code
on dual-processor machines which cause the File System to falsely
return a 'file not found' error code. Sometimes this is very
repeatable sometimes it goes away spontaneously; on many (perhaps the
vast majority of) machines it doesn't happen at all. We have not seen
enough cases to really get to the bottom of it.
On the other hand, as I said this could be as simple as a
marginally-readable disk sector on your hard drive, and the reinstall
caused the drive firmware to spare out that sector and allocate the
SyncServices framework in a more reliable spot on your disk. If the
problem doesn't happen any more, then it's most likely a disk error.
We need more cases on record for this. If it reoccurs, please file a
Radar bug at bugreporter.apple.com and enclose a full Apple System
Profiler report as well as a full build transcript from the machine
that is not working.
I apologize for the inconvenience and understand your frustration. I
hope things are working for you now.
Chris
