Thanks to the people who answered my last set of questions about Xcode. I wonder if I could try a few more...
On the subject of time, I know people have moaned about build times before. Can anyone suggest ways of improving them (apart from distributed builds)? My 81-file project takes a total of 2:10 to build the debug variant on a 2Ghz G5, which is exactly the same time CW builds it in on a 300MHz iBook! I feel that can't be right...
Admittedly, 25 seconds of the Xcode build is a phase it describes as "Processing 30 of 81", or whatever, which doesn't happen if I compile an individual file, and occurs after the Zerolink stage. I'm not sure that has always been there - was there I compiler option I added which caused that to occur?
I feel the same.
Unfortunately, - no fortunately!! - i didn't experience this myself - so far. So, I can't tell what might be a problem there.
Hints:
- try to compare the two systems and find any differences.
- use Shark on both machines, and take a sample of *all* processes while you build. Then compare the two profiles.
Maybe an Apple engineer can help here?
I'm trying to keep an open mind about Xcode, and not compare it to CW unfairly, but I can't help feeling in the back of my mind that it's an unfinished product not really fit for serious use. Not wanting to start of a flame war, but what is peoples' impression of how quickly bugs get fixed in Xcode, and whether Apple are committed to making it really good now CW is breathing its last? I'm worried (as I gather some people feel is the case with IB) that "interface" bugs that don't cause incorrect behaviour, but are just tedious to work with and slow down workflows, may never get fixed.
I fully agree with you.
But i also believe that Apple engineers are all working hard to improve XCode.
I don't want to sound too negative about Xcode - there are things I think are absolutely brilliant about it - but it would be nice to get the basics right before all the bells and whistles...
I even more agree with you within this respect.
I would like to know Apples opinion about making XCode open source. Even though, developers wouldn't actively involved, it would be much easier to identify locations of bugs and propose sound improvements.
Furthermore, i would much appreciate a better, more "open" bug report system, like BugZilla.
I think, many people do just not report a bug, because the think "*this* bug is certainly already reported because it is that obvious".
Then, bugs can be discussed in the forum and can be more specified - and due to the open discussion many other people can contribute to solve a certain problem.
But, I think, i do not really need to explain the advantages of such a bug reporting system, or do I?
I strongly believe, this would speed up the development process for XCode - and we - the developers - can benefit from this, and in turn Apple, as we develop products running on Apple machines.
Regards
Andreas
Cheers
