compile error while switching from gcc 3.3 to 4.0

I am trying to compile with gcc 4.0 the same code that did not have any problems with 3.3 (not even serious warnings).
I get a lot of errors like this:
./Particles/ParticleStuffParameters.h:442: error: invalid use of undefined type 'struct ParticleStuff' ./Particles/ParticleStuffParameters.h:18: error: forward declaration of 'struct ParticleStuff'
The code has circular dependencies so it has forward declarations like:
class ParticleStuff;
I searched the internet a lot for a hint, but could not get one. I use Xcode 2.1
