That's not acceptable to me, because to me, the detail view _is_ another workspace mode. I never liked that mode, and I was hoping I'd be fully rid of it in Xcode 2. But since I can't change header settings without bringing it up, I consider that to be a problem with the condensed view. I think I already filed a bug on this...
