distributed builds in makefiles

Hi,

I am using Makefiles as a part of my build process and am wondering if there's a way that Makefiles could take advantage of multiple CPUs and distributed compiling like Xcode builds. My makefile is wrapped in an Xcode project, so are there any environment variables hat Xcode sets that I could use?
