I've been using FileVault for years without any problems. But after
moving to a MacBook Pro, I've seen two corruptions of my FileVault
sparse image in a month. Both have happened shortly after system hangs
where I had to force reboot the machine.
In both cases, Disk Utility couldn't help. But I was able to use
DiskWarrior 3.0.3 (on a PPC machine) to successfully repair the image
both times. However I had the advantage of being able to mount the image
successfully.
Unfortunately I don't think that DiskWarrior can operate on an
unmounted, file based image. You might want to check with Alsoft to see
what they can do.
Alternatively you could contact ProSoft regarding their Data Rescue
product. But again, I think that that product only operates on hard
drives, not file based images.
Good luck,
