One thing that will help you with error messages is to open the build results window by choosing Build > Build Results. The top of the build results window lists the steps Xcode took building your project and provides more information about the error than "Build failed".

Underneath the build steps are four small buttons. Clicking the third button opens the build transcript. The build transcript provides more detailed information about the build steps Xcode took.
