Isn't that a bug in XCode? How do I set an invalid build setting or how is the . xcconfig file rendered unreadable? I did not modify anything outside of XCode.

If Xcode throws an exception in response to an invalid build setting it could certainly be considered a bug in Xcode, but I think that Chris is trying to offer you a way to troubleshoot and workaround the problem until they can diagnose and fix it. Don't forget to file a bug report with a backtrace to the crash to help them do that.

What crash? It just brings up a dialog and says an exception occurred. If I click continue it keeps bringing it up again and again. I can't see how this is not a bug. How do I get a backtrace of that?
 a) Nobody's saying it's not a bug, not me, not j o a r.  It's a bug.  He's right, I was giving you the workaround. b) An exception is a crash handled a little more gracefully.  You may be able to recover from it.  But it's still a crash, and still a bug.
