One option would be to create a sparse image that's larger than you'll
ever need (e.g., 1Gb), which can then be shrunk when you compress it.

This is the approach I use in my dmgutil script:

    <http://www.refnum.com/products/dmgutil/>

Sparse images require their maximum size be free at the time of
creation, but assuming you have enough local disk space this approach
works well.
