stringValue?

I'm getting a warning on this line:

NSString *dir = [[initialDirectory stringValue] stringByTrimmingCharactersInSet:[NSCharacterSet whitespaceAndNewlineCharacterSet]];

"warning: NSString may not respond to -stringValue"

I'm new, so any response is appreciated.
