I wasn't aware that the BSD and Cocoa APIs were disapproved of. :-)

Both are - thanks to MAXPATHLEN - not _guaranteed_ to work with anything more than one folder nesting level deep.
It's just that for typing-lazy and english speaking (UNIX) folks it just MIGHT work out much longer / deeper nested.
