Best approach for customized project templates?

I want to change a few of the settings in my XCode project templates.
Simple stuff - like always make sure that "Treat Warnings as errors"
is enabled and "Enable Objective-C exceptions". Things that I always
or almost always use and want to keep on. I don't want to re-check
everything for each new project I create.
This was easy - I went into the global template definitions to the
half a dozen or so projects I use regularly and enabled the options I
wanted, and then axed my created pbxuser file. Tedious, but effective.
Worked like a charm.
The problem is that I inevitably forget about it when I install an
XCode update and blow away my changes, causing me to need to go in and
re-create 'em all. It's a major headache.
So my question is - what's a better way to do this? I'd considered
making my own copies of the various projects I regularly use, but then
I'd miss any changes Apple made to the global ones, and I still
wouldn't have the mods for the projects I don't regularly use.
Ideally, I'd just like some way to say "keep these options enabled in
all projects".
What would be a good approach to take?
